Transfer from Rome to Amalfi Coast
Make your transfer pleasurable one
Making the transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast is not too difficult, though it will require a couple of stops to transfer trains.
Many visitors opt to transfer from the Rome airport to Positano, since the latter is one of the most centrally located towns on the Amalfi Coast.
However, it is also possible to travel from Rome to other coastal cities, such as Amalfi or Salerno if that happens to be where your hotel is located.
Navigatong Rome’s Airports
If you have just flown into Rome and are looking to make the transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast, you may first have to navigate your way around the airport.
There are two main airports in Rome, the Fiumicino and Ciampino. The former is more commonly known as the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport and is the larger of the two.
The Ciampino is smaller but still just a short distance from the city center.
Both airports provide shuttle buses that will take passengers to the Roma Termini (the train station), which is the next leg of the transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.
The Train to Naples
Once you’ve left the airport and made your way to the train station in Rome, you will want to secure a ticket to Naples; the central station there is called the Napoli Centrale.
Because this is a common commuter route, trains run between the two cities all day. There are, however, a few different options as to which train to take. The Rapido and the Regionale are the cheapest options, but they are also the slowest, with the travel time from Rome to Naples being about three hours.
The IC Plus will take just over two hours and is a bit more expensive, and the Eurostar trains are the fastest (but also the most expensive), with a travel time of less than two hours.
The Circumvesuviana
The decision on which train to take to Naples is entirely yours; it will depend on the amount of time you have as well as your travel budget. Keep in mind that once you’ve arrived in Naples, you will still have to board one more train to complete the transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.
This secondary line is called the Circumvesuviana, and will take you from Naples to the coastal town of Sorrento in just over an hour. Trains depart every half hour all day, though take note that they do not run overnight.
Buses to Coastal Cities
While the Circumvesuviana will take you to either Sorrento or Pompeii, if your destination is Amalfi, Ravello, or Positano, you will need to grab a bus from the station to your destination. These are very inexpensive, and because the stretch of Coast is not that long, travel time will be short.
It’s also possible to hire a private driver to pick you up from the Circumvesuviana station in Sorrento and take you directly to your hotel.
It is in fact possible to bypass some of this public transportation in favor of hiring a car service or personal chauffeur to help you make the transfer from Rome to the Amalfi Coast.
This can add a level of convenience to the trip, and eliminate some of the stops, thought it may be a bit pricier.
